SIU System Initiatives, Inc, (SIU SI) a 501c3 tax-exempt corporation, is a university related organization (or URO) under the Southern Illinois University System President’s Office. Founded in April 2023, with tax-exempt determination arriving in April 2024, SIU SI is governed by a highly qualified board of directors representing the campuses of the university system. The corporation is empowered by its bylaws to operate within the constructs of Internal Revenue Service requirements as a 501c3 corporation as well as the Illinois Legislative Audit Commission guidelines. SIU SI is managed by the SIU System President’s Office of and is based in Springfield, Illinois.
The purposes of SIU SI include:
- Provide access to additional resources needed to meet the strategic goals of the SIU System President’s Office, and
- Support the teaching, research, and service missions of the university system by
- Holding common stock and equities secured from the commercialization of research creative enterprises spun off from the talented faculty of the university system, and
- Assist in resourcing those research and creative activities by leveraging external support.
- Provide an attractive target for external support to further the efforts of the SIU System President’s Office to increase community development and outreach in areas that include:
- Economic and community development, and
- Diversity, equity and inclusion, and
- Infrastructure needs.
SIU SI will help to further leverage support for the SIU campuses in Carbondale, Edwardsville and Springfield as well as allow the system president’s office to further its efforts to raise public awareness and involvement of the SIU System by increasing the role of the university system in supporting the communities served by the system.
