Mission
SIU System Online Course Exchange is a student-centered system initiative that creates opportunities for our campuses to collaboratively transform lives by offering a wide array of high-quality online courses and programs focused on serving and empowering our current students, and individuals in our region with an opportunity to impact learners nationally and globally. Accessible, convenient learning and degree attainment for an expanded and diverse community of learners is realized as SIU System Course Exchange leverages the strengths of its campuses to create and market a comprehensive catalog of online offerings as well as streamlined processes for admission, enrollment, and student support allowing learners to achieve their full potential.
Goals for SIU System Online
- Increase student access to higher education;
- Create a competitive advantage for the SIU System through the strengths of online programs on its campuses;
- Increase revenue opportunities for the SIU System and its campuses through online offerings; and
- Create accessible and convenient opportunities for degree completion
System Strategic Plan Alignment
The SIU System Online initiative is set forth in the SIU system strategic plan. Goal 1 of the 2022-2026 plan addresses the responsibility of campus stakeholders for Academic Innovation and Student Success. Objective 1 further specifies our commitment to create and Implement a flexible coordinated program to increase college degree attainment for Southern Illinois.
National Association of System Heads (NASH) Curricular Flexibility Initiative
The SIU system was selected as one of four schools selected to participate in funded efforts to specifically set up an infrastructure to implement course sharing across the campuses.
The SIU system project has set forth the following goal, “By the end of spring 2026, the participating systems will provide access to course sharing for students at all participating institutions.” The system office hosts regular meetings and monitors progress in support of this goal.
NASH is continuing to build systems’ capacity to use improvement science to address stubborn obstacles to college access and completion Systemness in Action: Southern Illinois University’s Course Sharing Success.
Key Metrics
Fall 2023—include the number of students engaged through each campus, the number of courses available for sharing, and a student testimonial from a Fall 2023 participant.
