Biography of Lucas D. Crater
Luke Crater serves as the General Counsel for Southern Illinois University. In this capacity he is the principal legal advisor for the University, working closely with the Board of Trustees, President, and other Board-appointed officers. He directs counsel at the various campuses to ensure that timely and effective legal representation is provided to the University. Mr. Crater has also previously served as Associate General Counsel for Healthcare and Compliance, Assistant General Counsel, and Law Clerk in the Office of the General Counsel at Southern Illinois University.
Prior to his pursuits in the field of law, Mr. Crater served in the Illinois Office of the Governor, initially as a Dunn Fellow for the Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor for Environment and Natural Resources and later as the Governor’s Travel Aide. He also has a number of extensive governmental experiences including service at the White House, the United States House of Representatives, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Mr. Crater is a graduate of Valparaiso University with a B.A. in political science and history, as well as minors in economics and human biology. He obtained his J.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Law. Mr. Crater is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Illinois State Bar Association, and Certified in Healthcare Compliance by the Health Care Compliance Association.
