Life Science

SIU provides routine contract life science services such as imaging, mass spectrometry, NMR, vector production, nutritional and environmental analysis, through several specialized facilities. Some of our life science research strengths include surgical innovations, drug design, engineered cell lines, synthetic biology and biofuels.
Pharma
SIUE School of Pharmacy - Engages in research designed to evaluate safety, efficacy and patient outcomes associated with medication use in numerous clinical areas. A major focus in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is drug design and discovery.
SIU School of Medicine, Dept of Pharmacology - Research teams and faculty study the mechanisms of disease, develop and test novel drug therapies and seek to understand and prevent drug interactions. Research activities involve the investigation of drugs as they apply to areas of interest like cancer biology, toxicology, hearing loss and neuroscience.
Biotechnology Services
SIU Research Imaging Facility The Research Imaging Facility (RIF) provides approximately 2900 square feet of laboratory space dedicated to imaging and quantitative analyses.
SIU School of Medicine Imaging & Flow Cytometry Provides acquisition, analysis, and cell sorting services as well as consultation for project planning for outside customers.
SIUC Integrated Microscopy and Graphics Expertise (IMAGE)
Center for Clinical Research (CCR)
Synthetic Biology
Synthetic Biology - The interdisciplinary SIUC SynMic team specializes in novel synthetic biology and metabolic engineering to craft highly efficient sustainable microbial cell factories addressing issues such as climate change, plastic pollution, food security, and chronic diseases. The SynMic Lab is continuously inventing new synthetic biology techniques to produce value-added fuels, chemicals, polymers from renewable biomass, and unconventional sources such as industrial wastewater and plastic waste.
Genetic Engineering
SOM Vector Core Facility - Production of viral and non-viral vectors for use in pre-clinical studies
SIUC Plant Biotechnology and Genome Core-Facility - Genetic mapping strategies for new cultivars and gene regulation applications for biohazard remediation.
Food Science/Fermentation
SIUC Fermentation Science Institute - The FSI Service Laboratory provides outreach to fermentation related businesses and economic development.
SIUE NCERC - Providing pilot-scale contract fermentation services for biomass upcycling.
